Stump Grinding tailored to the tree and property
Grinding versus excavation
Stump grinding mechanically reduces the stump and selected roots below grade. It is less disruptive than full excavation, but portions of the root system usually remain underground and decompose over time.
Measure for a useful quote
Measure the stump at its widest point near ground level and note gate width, steps, slopes, irrigation, utility boxes and nearby hardscape. Photos can help determine whether an on-site visit is needed.
Plan the finished area
Tell the estimator whether you plan to install lawn, hardscape, a garden bed or another tree. The intended use affects grinding depth, cleanup and backfill recommendations.
Stump Grinding questions
Does stump grinding remove every root?
No. Grinding targets the stump and selected accessible roots; much of the root system typically remains below ground and decomposes over time.
Can a new tree be planted in the same spot?
Sometimes, but remaining roots, wood chips and soil conditions can make an offset location preferable. Discuss replanting plans before grinding.
What happens to the wood chips?
Chip handling varies by estimate. They may be left for mulch, used as backfill in part or hauled away depending on the agreed scope.
